Implementing Low-Cost Modifications Improves Nutrient Reduction

U.S. EPA’s Office of Wetlands Oceans and Watersheds, OST, OWM issued draft “Case Studies on Implementing Low-Cost Modifications to Improve Nutrient Reduction at Wastewater Treatment Plants” (U.S. EPA, Aug. 2015, EPA-841-R-15-004).  The document is aimed at providing empirical data on low-cost infrastructure upgrades.  The case studies highlighted Bay Point, FL; Bozeman, MT; Chinook, MT; Crewe, VA; Flagstaff, AZ; Hampden Twp., PA; Layton, FL; Montrose, CO; Tampa, FL; Titusville, FL; Victor Valley, CA; and Wolfeboro, NH.  Optimizing nutrient removal equated to cost savings and benefits at sites that realized benefits through reduction in solids hauling and laboratory discovery sampling, thus allowing for the ability to proactively focus on dewatering and biosolids removal for additional savings. Additional case study site findings noted that with changes implemented, digested sludge quality remained as good or better, with no problems meeting Class B biosolids regulations.
