WEF releases CHP Internal Combustion Engine Technical Report

The Water Environment Federation (WEF) Residuals and Biosolids Committee, Bioenergy Technology Subcommittee Combined Heat and Power Task Force released the “Internal Combustion Engines” technical report.  This document provides a status review of combined heat & power (CHP) technologies applicable for implementation at water resource recovery facilities (WRRFs). CHP, also called ‘cogeneration,’ is defined as the concurrent or simultaneous production of electricity and thermal energy from a power generating device. Reciprocating internal combustion engines provide nearly 2.3 GW of power capacity in CHP installations. This report describes the technology, theory, and operation of such facilities, as well as providing technical data from available manufacturers.
